Latest Updates

Why Is ACCA Changing the Syllabus in 2027?

ACCA isn't just making changes for the sake of it. These updates are a strategic move to ensure that ACCA professionals are perfectly equipped for the modern global workplace. Employers today are looking for more than just technical accounting skills; they need individuals who can think strategically, understand digital tools, address sustainability challenges, and demonstrate strong ethical leadership.

The core reasons behind these significant updates include:

  • Meeting Employer Demands: The finance industry is evolving rapidly, and employers require professionals with a blend of technical expertise and practical, real-world skills.
  • Focus on necessity: Given the growing influence of technology, data analytics, and artificial intelligence in the finance sector, it's essential for accountants to develop strong digital proficiency.
  • Focus on Sustainability and Ethics: Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors are now crucial for businesses, and ethical decision-making is more important than ever.
  • Enhancing Employability: The aim is to make ACCA graduates even more 'job-ready' right from the start of their careers.
  • Streamlining the Qualification: To make the journey more efficient and impactful, some structural changes are also being introduced.

What's Changing: The New ACCA Qualification Pattern from 2027

While the core essence of ACCA remains, the structure and some paper names are getting an overhaul. The total number of exams will also be reduced from 13 to 11 for most students starting fresh.

Here’s a simplified look at the levels and what's new:

Previous Structure (Up to June 2027 Exams):

  1. Applied Knowledge (Total - 3 papers)

  2. Applied Skills (Total - 6 papers)

  3. Strategic Professional Level: This final stage has 4 papers – 2 you must clear, and you can choose any 2 from a list of optional subjects.

New Structure (From July/September 2027 Exams):

  1. Knowledge (3 papers)

  2. Expertise (5 papers)

  3. At the Strategic Professional level, you'll find 3 papers in total: 2 of these are compulsory, and you'll choose 1 from the optional subjects

Let’s explore each level in detail, including the new ACCA exam list:

1. Knowledge Level (Earlier: Applied Knowledge)

Essential Employability Modules (EEMs) in ACCA

These new online modules are a significant addition to the ACCA qualification. They are mandatory at each level (Knowledge, Expertise, Strategic Professional) and are designed to:

  • Integrate Skills: Blend technical accounting knowledge with critical soft skills like communication, leadership, ethical judgment, and digital fluency.
  • Real-World Application: Offer simulated workplace experiences and scenarios, making the learning more practical.
  • Flexible Learning: They are online and can be completed at your own pace alongside your exams within each level.
  • PER Contribution: Crucially, completing these EEMs might allow students to gain up to 6 months of their 36-month Practical Experience Requirement (PER) through simulated learning, making it easier to meet the work experience criteria. Specific details on this are still emerging.

Transitioning to the 2027 Syllabus: What About Current Students?

If you're already studying ACCA or plan to start before the changes kick in, don't worry! ACCA has given its word that existing students will face no difficulties during this syllabus change.

  • Recognition of Prior Learning: Any papers you have already passed will be mapped to the new structure, and your progress will be fully recognized. You won't lose your existing credits or have to repeat exams unless there's a significant content overlap that requires re-assessment (which is generally not expected for completed papers).
  • Transition Tool: ACCA will provide a dedicated "Transition Tool" on their MyACCA portal. This tool will help you see exactly how your completed papers translate to the new syllabus and what you need to study next.
  • Last Sitting for Old Syllabus: The last chance to sit for exams under the current syllabus will be the June 2027 exam session for Applied Skills and Strategic Professional papers. For the Knowledge-level papers, which are computer-based exams you can take anytime, the changes are expected to come into effect around July 2027.
  • NorthStar Academy's Support: At NorthStar Academy, we will provide clear guidance and support to all our students regarding these transitions. Our faculty and counsellors will help you map your study plan to the new requirements and ensure you have all the updated study materials.
