Paper codes like "SBL" or "AA" sound like alphabet soup until someone actually tells you what's inside them. So let's go through it level by level.
Applied Knowledge β 3 Exams
Consider this the warm-up lap. Everyone starts here, and honestly, its whole job is just to make sure you've got the basics locked in before things start getting genuinely hard.
- Business and Technology (BT) β basically how businesses tick day to day. Structure, governance, and where accountants actually fit into that bigger picture
- Management Accounting (MA) β costing, budgeting, and how a company keeps tabs on its own performance from the inside
- Financial Accounting (FA) β the real foundation stuff. Double-entry bookkeeping, building financial statements, and actually learning to read them properly instead of just staring blankly
Applied Skills β 6 Exams
Once you clear Applied Knowledge, things step up a notch , actually, more than a notch. This is where accounting, tax, law, and finance all start asking a lot more of you.
- Corporate and Business Law (LW)
- Performance Management (PM)
- Taxation (TX)
- Financial Reporting (FR)
- Audit and Assurance (AA)
- Financial Management (FM)
If we're being real, these six are the papers that end up mattering most once you're actually working , tax filings, audits, financial calls that affect real money. Want the nitty-gritty on what each paper covers? The ACCA Syllabus breaks it all down topic by topic.
Strategic Professional β 4 Exams
This is the home stretch, and it plays by slightly different rules than the first two levels. Two papers are non-negotiable, and then you pick two more from a shortlist of four.
Essential (no way around these two):
- Strategic Business Leader (SBL)
- Strategic Business Reporting (SBR)
Options (choose any 2 out of 4):
- Advanced Financial Management (AFM)
- Advanced Performance Management (APM)
- Advanced Taxation (ATX)
- Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA)
Here's where people usually trip up, so pay attention to this bit. If you literally count every paper listed at this level, you'll land on 6. But you never actually sit all 6 , you only ever take 4, because two of those four option papers just aren't part of your journey at all. That's the whole reason the final count lands on 13, not 15. Seriously, this one confuses more people than you'd expect.
