Why CA Exam Is India’s Toughest Professional Test

ICAI conducts it in three levels. Foundation then Intermediate then Final. You also finish articleship which is training under a practising CA and it runs alongside your papers.

Foundation has four papers. Accounting and Business Laws and Quantitative Aptitude and Business Economics. The last two are objective with negative marking. Intermediate has six papers in two groups and Final has six more. Final Group II includes Direct Tax and Indirect Tax and the case study paper called Integrated Business Solutions which students tend to dread.

Accounting standards. Ind AS. Company law. Income tax. GST. Audit standards. Costing. Financial management. Strategy. Any one of these could fill a degree. Here you get all of them and ICAI can ask about any corner of it.

Here is the rule that catches people. You need 40 percent in every paper and 50 percent in the group overall. Score well in five papers and drop to 38 in the sixth and you have failed the group. Not the paper. The whole group.

I have seen students miss by one mark. Then they wait for the next attempt and start the same revision again.

Ask any CA student what a good score looks like and they will say 60. Seventy is a score people remember for years. Half the battle is the paper itself. You get a long scenario and have to find the rule and do the sums and then write the answer in a way the examiner will accept. Studying the chapter alone won’t carry you through that.

Knowing the chapter does not get you there. You have to show it on paper in three hours.

Finance Act changes land every year. Tax rates and GST provisions shift and ICAI announces which amendments apply to which attempt. Company law and audit standards get updated too. So the notes you made in March may be partly wrong by September.

Most students are at a firm all day. Audit visits and tax filings and client calls. Peak season can mean working past midnight and then you still have a chapter to finish. Articleship is currently two years though the rules have been revised before so check the latest ICAI notice.

It is not the work itself that drains people. It is doing it and studying and having nothing left.

Around four and a half to five years after Class 12 if everything goes smoothly. It rarely does. People fail a group and come back. Some skip an attempt for health or family reasons. Over that many years your motivation goes up and down and many students say that was harder than any subject.

Low at all three levels. It moves from one attempt to another and Final is usually the lowest especially when you count students who clear both groups. Look at the latest result announcement on the ICAI website for actual numbers because anything in an old blog is probably stale.

One thing I would point out. Most people who fail are not weak at the subject. They ran out of revision time or lost marks on how they wrote the answer. Some attempted both groups at once with no real plan.

Everyone loves this debate. UPSC asks for range and writing skill and has a long selection process. JEE is fast problem solving. CA wants depth in many technical subjects and expects you to hold a job at the same time for years. They are just hard in different ways. CS and CMA are serious courses too but students who have seen both usually call CA heavier.

Revision. You finish the syllabus once and feel good. The second round is rushed and a topic you knew in June has vanished by the exam. Coaching notes only. The papers come from ICAI material and people skip it. Same with the RTPs and MTPs that ICAI releases before each attempt. They show you the pattern and a lot of students never open them.

Writing speed. You can understand a topic and still run out of time. A full mock on a clock tells you this early. The exam hall tells you too late. Choosing both groups together without thinking. Know your strong subjects before you decide.

Begin with ICAI study material. Add coaching or videos if you need them. Build a plan around your office hours and not around some topper’s timetable because that falls apart in two weeks.

Revise at least three times. Do past papers and RTPs and MTPs and take full papers on a clock. Check them honestly. Mark the topics that keep costing you marks and go back to those.

Sleep. It sounds boring but in the last month it counts for more than one extra hour of study. Many people who cleared it say they just stayed regular.

Mostly yes. Chartered accountants work in audit and taxation and finance and consulting and corporate roles. The qualification is respected and the demand holds steady. If you are about to start ask yourself one thing. Can you keep going when a result goes wrong? If yes then you have what you need.
