CFA exam duration is one of the most practical things to plan around, since sitting through several hours of testing requires its own kind of preparation, separate from content mastery.
Level I duration: 4 hours and 30 minutes total, split into two sessions of 2 hours 15 minutes each, with 90 questions per session for a total of 180 multiple-choice questions.
Level II duration: 4 hours and 24 minutes total, split into two sessions of 2 hours 12 minutes each. The exam consists of 22 item sets with 88 accompanying multiple-choice questions in total.
Level III duration: 4 hours and 24 minutes total, also split into two sessions of 2 hours 12 minutes each, with an optional break in between. The exam combines item sets and constructed response question sets, with most sets worth 12 points each. A small number of sets are unscored pilot questions used by the CFA Institute to test future material, though you won't know which ones during the exam.
Notice that CFA exam duration is nearly identical for Levels II and III, even though the question types are completely different. This is worth planning for specifically. Level III candidates need to practice pacing between essay writing and item-set analysis within the same time constraints that Level II candidates use purely for reading vignettes and answering MCQs.
