CFA Course in India: Eligibility, Exam Structure and Fees

The CFA is administered by the CFA Institute, headquartered in the US, and is widely regarded as one of the toughest credentials in finance to earn. It's aimed at people headed toward investment research, portfolio management, equity analysis or asset management, not generalist finance jobs. India is the third-largest CFA market globally, with over 32,000 candidates registering each year.

There are three levels, and you clear them in sequence. Level 1 covers the fundamentals accounting, economics, quant methods, ethics. Level 2 gets into valuation and asset analysis. Level 3 moves toward portfolio management and wealth planning. You don't get the charter just by passing all three; the work-experience requirement has to be satisfied too.

The eligibility bar isn't fixed; it changes as you move up the levels. Clearing Level 1 doesn't lock in your eligibility for Level 2 or 3 automatically.

Level 1

• No finance background required, which trips up a lot of people who assume otherwise. You qualify through one of three routes.
• Route one: a completed bachelor's degree, any field, from a recognized university.
• Route two: you're in the final two years of your bachelor's and your exam date falls within 23 months of your expected graduation. You can sit for Level 1 before the degree is actually in hand.
• Route three: 4,000 hours of qualifying work experience, or a mix of work and higher education that adds up to 4,000 hours over at least three consecutive years; the education and work periods can't overlap.
• On top of one of those three, you'll need a valid international passport (it's the ID used at the test center), you have to meet CFA Institute's professional conduct standards, and you need to be based somewhere the program is actually offered. No age cutoff, no minimum grade requirement.

Level 2

• If you got into Level 1 as an undergraduate on the provisional route, that window closes faster than people expect  you need to be within 11 months of graduating to register for Level 2. If you came in through the completed-degree or work-experience route, none of that applies; passing Level 1 is enough to move forward. The passport and conduct requirements from Level 1 stay in effect.

Level 3

• By Level 3, the provisional undergraduate route is no longer an option. You need the bachelor's degree finished, or the full 4,000 hours of qualifying work experience, before you can register. Passport and professional conduct requirements still apply, same as the earlier levels.

All three levels are computer-based exams held at Prometric centers, but they don't run on the same schedule. Level 1 is offered four times a year February, May, August, November so there's room to work around a job or coursework. Level 2 runs three times a year. Level 3 only twice, in February and August. That gap matters: missing a Level 3 attempt can set you back close to a year before the next window opens.

• CFA Institute dropped the old USD 350 one-time enrollment fee for 2026  that cost no longer applies to new candidates.
• Level 1 and Level 2 registration runs USD 1,140 early or USD 1,490 at the standard deadline. Level 3 is a bit higher: USD 1,240 early, USD 1,590 standard. On top of that, Indian candidates pay 18% GST, since the exam is treated as an international service so the actual rupee cost comes out higher than the USD figure suggests once GST and conversion are factored in.
• Registering early saves roughly USD 350 per level, which adds up across three levels, but the bigger benefit is the extra prep time before the window closes, arguably more valuable than the money, given how much material each level covers.
• Beyond the registration fee, most candidates also pay for study material and often coaching. Prep material alone tends to run ₹15,000–₹40,000 per level if you're buying beyond the official curriculum. Coaching varies a lot by provider anywhere from ₹20,000 to ₹1,00,000+ per level for a full classroom or live-online program. All in exam fees, GST, materials, coaching, across all three levels most Indian candidates end up somewhere between ₹3.5 lakh and ₹5 lakh, assuming things go reasonably smoothly.
• There are scholarships worth checking. The Access Scholarship, for candidates who can show financial need, brings the fee down to about USD 400. The Student and Professor Scholarships (for university students and qualifying faculty) bring it to about USD 600, a substantial cut if cost is the main obstacle.

• For commerce graduates, the CFA opens doors that a plain degree doesn't. Level 1 candidates in India typically start around ₹4–₹6 lakh per annum in entry-level roles, and charterholders at global investment firms can reach ₹12–₹30 lakh or more, depending on role and experience. Employers in research, equity analysis and advisory work do show a real preference for charterholders over candidates without it.
• That said, it's not a fast credential, and it's not for everyone. If you just need practical modeling or Excel skills for a job in the next few months, a shorter course will get you there quicker. But for a long-term career in investment research, portfolio management or asset management, the CFA is still one of the more respected credentials you can hold, in India or abroad.

The CFA takes real time, money and effort; there's no shortcut through it. But for commerce students and professionals aiming at investment research, portfolio management or asset management, it remains one of the credentials that actually moves the needle.
