Two CMAs, two timelines
The US CMA comes from the IMA, the Institute of Management Accountants in America. It has two exam parts and most people get through them in months, not years.
The Indian CMA comes from ICMAI, an Indian institute. It’s built in three levels, Foundation, Intermediate and Final, with practical training on top. That one takes years.
Comparison Factor | US CMA (IMA) | Indian CMA (ICMAI) |
|---|---|---|
Structure | 2 exam parts | Foundation, Intermediate, Final (20 papers) |
Typical time | 6 to 18 months for the exams | About 3 to 4 years after Class 12 |
After graduation | Same 2 parts | About 2.5 to 3.5 years, starting at Intermediate |
Work or training | 2 years of experience | 15 months of practical training |
Time limit | 3 years to pass both parts | Set by ICMAI’s rules |
These times are rough, and websites don’t agree on every number. Check the official sites before you plan anything.
