Should You take CMA USA Part 1 or Part 2 First?
There is no hard and fast rule for following any particular order and candidates can attempt their choice of CMA part first. Which is the right choice depends on how much prep time you have, strength of background subjects, and overall confidence level. Part 1 is more about accounting, planning, costing and analytics and Part 2 is more about finance, decision-making and strategy. Part 1 tends to be easier for students with an accounting based heavy background and finance based students tend to prefer starting at Part 2.
Choose CMA Part 1 First if
If you are already familiar with accounting, costing, budgeting and internal controls then go for CMA Part 1 first. You want to have a solid base before you begin exploring the strategic finance topics. You come from a B.Com in accounts or general commerce. You usually prefer calculations and technical subjects over conceptual discussions.
Choose CMA Part 2 First If
You are comfortable with finance, investment decisions, risk and strategic thinking. You have an MBA in finance, CFA or more broadly a finance background. You like concepts and analysis rather than lots of calculation. You want to start off with a paper that feels more strategic, more decision-focused right off the bat.
