How many papers in CMA India
The Indian course is run by ICMAI and it climbs through three levels called Foundation , Intermediate and Final. Foundation has 4 papers and Intermediate has 8 and Final has 8 which brings the total papers in CMA India to 20. Every paper carries 100 marks so the three levels add up to 400 and 800 and 800 marks.
Intermediate and Final are each split into two groups of four papers. You can attempt one group at a time or both together and to pass you need at least 40% in every paper and 50% overall in each group. The current paper structure comes from the 2022 syllabus which has been in use since the June 2023 exams.
- Foundation level
The four CMA Foundation papers are the entry point and they are objective type which means multiple choice questions. They cover Fundamentals of Business Laws and Business Communication and Fundamentals of Financial and Cost Accounting and Fundamentals of Business Mathematics and Statistics and Fundamentals of Business Economics and Management. Think of them as a light base in law and accounts and maths and economics before the heavier subjects begin.
- Intermediate level
The eight CMA Intermediate papers sit in two groups. Group I has Business Laws and Ethics and Financial Accounting and Direct and Indirect Taxation and Cost Accounting. Group II has Operations Management and Strategic Management and Corporate Accounting and Auditing and Financial Management and Business Data Analytics and Management Accounting. Questions mix objective and descriptive types so you need to write answers and not only pick them.
- Final level
The CMA Final papers are the toughest stretch of the course. Group III has Corporate and Economic Laws and Strategic Financial Management and Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation and Strategic Cost Management. Group IV has Cost and Management Audit and Corporate Financial Reporting and Indirect Tax Laws and Practice and one elective paper. You pick the elective when you enrol for Final from three options which are Strategic Performance Management and Business Valuation and Risk Management in Banking and Insurance and Entrepreneurship and Startup.
