10 Things You Should Know Before Choosing Between CMA USA and ACCA
Fact 1: Different Career Focus – ACCA vs CMA USA
The main difference between the two qualifications is the professional focus.
CMA USA is more oriented toward management accounting and financial management. The two parts are: Financial Planning, Performance and Analytics Strategic Financial Management Topics include budgeting, forecasting, performance management, cost management, corporate finance, business decision analysis, risk management and investment decisions.
In simple terms, ACCA can be a better choice for someone who is keen on accounting, audit and reporting, whereas CMA USA can be a better choice for someone who is keen on corporate finance, business analysis and management decision-making.
Fact 2. They Are Structured Differently.
ACCA has a multi-level qualification structure. Its present qualification includes Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills and Strategic Professional examinations, Ethics and Professional Skills module and Practical Experience Requirement.
The CMA USA has a much more streamlined exam structure. Candidates must pass two parts of the exam:* Part 1: Financial Analytics, Planning & Performance * Part 2: Financial management strategy
The two parts may be taken in either order. Also current is an important update on the CMA exam. This means that, going forward, the English CMA exam will be in the new format, beginning with the September/October 2026 testing window, and will include case-based questions in most areas rather than essays. Therefore, candidates must check the latest official exam details before planning their preparation.
Fact 3: ACCA is wider, CMA USA is more specialized
ACCA’s wide syllabus gives the candidates a chance to study various areas of accountancy and finance. This may be of use to students who are not yet sure if they want to pursue a career in audit, taxation, financial reporting or corporate finance. CMA USA has a narrower but deeper focus on management accounting and financial decision making. This does not mean ACCA is blind to Management Accounting or CMA USA is not covering Accounting concepts. It is mostly a matter of emphasis. An ACCA professional may work in financial reporting or audit, a CMA USA professional may use financial information to help management make decisions about budgets, costs, investments or business performance.
Fact 4: You do not have to fulfill the same eligibility criteria
Applicants should not assume that meeting the criteria of one qualification automatically meets the criteria of the other. There are different entry requirements and routes into ACCA depending on a candidate’s educational background. Students who have appropriate prior learning may also be exempted from some examinations. The requirements for certification for CMA USA are: active IMA membership, a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or an applicable professional certification, two continuous years of relevant professional experience in management accounting or financial management, and successful completion of both examination parts. The required professional experience may be completed prior to or within the permitted period after passing the examinations. Candidates should verify the latest requirements of IMA before applying for the courses.
Fact 5: The way the cost is calculated is different
Cost is another major consideration when comparing ACCA vs CMA USA.
For ACCA, candidates may have to consider registration, annual subscription, examination fees, exemptions if applicable, study materials, coaching and possible re-take costs.
CMA USA costs include IMA Membership, CMA entrance fee and examination fees, and preparation materials or coaching. The fees currently listed by the IMA are based on the membership category.
For example, IMA currently charges different fees for professional and student/academic members, so total outlay can vary significantly across candidates.
Instead of asking which qualification is simply “cheaper” , candidates should calculate their expected total cost based on their eligibility, membership category, method of preparation and number of attempts.
Fact 6: Career Opportunities Can Take Different Directions
Both of the qualifications can lead to careers in finance, although the strongest career applications can be different.
