What is an Enrolled Agent
An enrolled agent is a tax professional who holds a licence from the US government. People call it EA for short. What makes it different from most other credentials is that the IRS itself gives it. There is no state board or private body in between. With this licence you can represent a taxpayer in front of the IRS. A client gets an audit notice and panics. You step in and talk to the IRS on their behalf and sort it out. This right is valid across all 50 states and that is the main reason US firms keep looking for EAs. Now the good news for Indian students. No US degree is needed and you do not have to move to the US. You can write the exam from an Indian test centre and later work for US clients while sitting in your own city.
