US CPA Course Duration, Top Roles with Salary After Passing

Most people need somewhere between 6 and 18 months to clear the exam. Study full time, and you might beat that and if you work a regular job you’ll land near the top of the range or a little past it.

The exam is only half of it though because your state board has its own rules after that and those take time too. So when someone asks how long the real answer is the exam plus the paperwork.

There are four sections and you can’t skip any of them. Three are the same for everybody and they’re Auditing and Attestation (AUD) and Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) and Regulation (REG). The fourth is your pick from Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR) or Information Systems and Controls (ISC) or Tax Compliance and Planning (TCP).

Each one is four hours long so that’s 16 hours in the testing room overall. You need a 75 to pass a section and you can take them in any order you like.

.The usual advice is 300 to 400 hours for the whole thing and FAR takes the biggest share at about 100 to 120 hours which is why plenty of people call it the hardest. REG is around 90 to 100 and AUD around 80 to 90 and your discipline anywhere from 70 to 100 depending on which one you chose.

Treat these as averages and not rules. Someone who already works in audit might fly through AUD and someone who’s never touched tax could find REG slow going so where you start changes the number.

Say you can only manage about 10 hours a week. A section then takes around 10 to 12 weeks once you add review and practice tests and four sections will run you well past a year.

Now say you’ve got 20 to 25 hours a week because you’re between jobs or still studying. Then 6 to 9 months is possible.

If you work full time and have a normal life plan for 12 to 18 months and don’t feel bad about it because that’s how it goes for most people. Leave a spare week for each section too since someone falls ill or a deadline lands at work or a cousin gets married and a plan with no slack breaks the first time life gets in the way.

This catches people off guard. After you pass your first section a timer starts and you’ve usually got 18 months to pass the other three. Miss it and a section you already passed can expire which means sitting it again and the exact period can change by state so look up yours.

It’s why a lot of people don’t leave FAR for the end. Picture needing two tries at FAR while an earlier pass is about to run out and that’s a bad month. Pass rates for each section sit around 45 to 55% so failing one isn’t unusual and it happens a lot. Just keep room for a retake inside the window.

Passing all four sections doesn’t make you a licensed CPA yet because your state board still has to approve you. Rules vary but they usually cover education credit hours (many states ask for 150) and some work experience and sometimes an ethics exam.

I’d read your target state’s rules before spending money on anything else. Plenty of Indian candidates find out the exam was the easy bit and the eligibility paperwork needs the real planning. One source puts the licensing side at around one to two years after you meet the education and experience rules but take that loosely because it depends on the state.

Starting without checking eligibility is the big one because some people study for months and then learn their credits don’t count. Long gaps between sections hurt too since you forget things and burn through the window and saving FAR for last is risky for the same reason.

Studying whenever you’re free usually means not studying and jumping between study materials every few weeks doesn’t help either. Pick one set and stay with it.

The CPA opens plenty of doors so it helps to know which ones you actually want.

Audit is the classic first stop. As an associate or senior you test a company’s accounts and controls and Big 4 and mid-size firms hire for it constantly. Tax is another where you prepare and review returns and advise on planning and in India a lot of that is US tax work for American clients.

Some people prefer financial reporting which means preparing statements under US GAAP and sometimes IFRS for global companies. Others go for FP&A or financial analyst jobs where you build budgets and forecasts and help managers read the numbers and internal audit and risk roles check that a company’s own processes really work.

Later on advisory and forensic work becomes an option usually after a few years of experience and the long road leads to controller or finance manager where you run the accounting team and the reporting.

In India many of these jobs sit in Big 4 delivery centres and in the global capability centres (GCCs) of US companies and in KPO firms. One market guide calls GCCs the fastest growing source of CPA jobs in India with Bangalore as a major hub.

Sources don’t agree so here’s the spread. One 2026 guide puts the average CPA salary in the US at roughly $85,000 to $100,000 and Glassdoor-based figures quoted elsewhere run from about $69,000 up to around $100,000. For entry level one source mentions roughly $4,500 to $5,000 a month.

Why so wide? Sites count different job titles and cities and experience levels and a CPA in a New York audit team isn’t paid like someone doing small-town bookkeeping. If the US is your plan use these as a rough range and look at current listings for your target state.

For freshers with 0 to 3 years of experience most sources land between about ₹6 and ₹12 lakh a year. One guide says ₹7 to ₹10 lakh and another market guide shows ₹8 to ₹18 lakh for freshers in some segments and Payscale’s average across all levels is lower at around ₹7 lakh because it counts everyone.

At the senior end with 7 or more years one source puts Senior Manager and Controller and Director-track roles at about ₹25 to ₹50 lakh and a few show even more at the very top.

Employer matters a lot. GCCs are said to pay the highest starting salaries because their pay follows global scales and Big 4 delivery centres come next and KPO firms are often the entry point for freshers with lower pay but plenty of exposure. City matters as well since one guide says Bangalore pays a bit above the national median because of how many GCCs are there and the big metros pay more than smaller cities.

A word of caution. A lot of these numbers come from coaching websites that sell CPA courses and their typical figures tend to lean high so cross-check with AmbitionBox and Glassdoor and real job listings for the roles you want.

Usually but not on its own. One source quotes a 2026 figure showing credentialed accountants earning about 21% more than non-credentialed ones in the US but it comes from a course provider so see it as a rough idea.

In India people often report a jump when they move from a general accounts job into a US-focused role with a CPA. Still real experience counts as much as the letters and a fresher with a CPA and no work history won’t get senior pay.

If you’re aiming for US accounting or audit or tax or reporting then yes because it’s one of the most widely recognised credentials there is. If you’d rather work on costing and business analysis inside a company the CMA might suit you better and if you only want US tax the EA is shorter and if your plan is audit in India only the CA is the local standard.

Think about money too. Exam fees are in dollars and you’ll likely need review materials and states charge their own fees so check current figures on the official sites before you budget.

Pick your target state first and read its board rules on education and experience. Then check whether your degree credits are enough and choose your discipline section next. After that work out how many hours a week you can really give and count backwards and book your first section and start with one you feel okay about. Keep a spare week for each section.
