Beyond the headline income tax relief, several other Union Budget tax changes are worth knowing, especially if you're a taxpayer, a small business owner, or someone managing compliance.
Extended window for updated returns. The time limit for filing an updated income tax return was extended from two years to four years from the end of the relevant assessment year, though this comes with additional tax payable depending on how late the update is filed. This gives taxpayers considerably more room to correct past filings without facing the harshest penalties.
Relief for smaller trusts. Registration validity for smaller trusts and charitable institutions was extended from five years to ten years, cutting down on repeated compliance work for organisations that previously had to renew registration far more often.
TDS and TCS rationalisation. The budget proposed removing Sections 206AB and 206CCA, which had imposed higher TDS and TCS rates on non-filers of income tax returns. This was part of a broader push to simplify withholding tax provisions and reduce the compliance burden on businesses that were tracking multiple exception categories.
A new income tax code. The government announced plans for a simpler, more comprehensible income tax code, aimed at making the law easier for both taxpayers and tax administrators to work with. This was framed as part of a "trust first, scrutinise later" philosophy that ran through much of the budget's direct tax messaging.
Track-and-trace mechanism. A new tracking system was introduced for specified goods, using unique identification markings to curb tax evasion. This is particularly relevant for sectors like pharmaceuticals and alcohol, where regulatory tracking has been a long-standing concern.
Presumptive taxation for non-residents. The presumptive taxation scheme was extended to non-residents providing services or technology for electronics manufacturing in India, with 25% of the amount received treated as deemed profit. This is a fairly technical change, but it matters for global companies supporting India's expanding electronics manufacturing base.
Together, these Union Budget tax changes reflect a consistent theme: reduce friction for compliant taxpayers, tighten the net around evasion, and simplify processes wherever possible.
